Well, i know it's been a good minute since i blogged, but I've been really busy. My oldest son is getting ready to leave the nest tomorrow and I'm just a bag full of emotions. I am so excited to see God move in our lives. From a very young age Aaron has said he would make it big and in all those years i have made it my business to encourage him to make it. Aaron started off very rough in school.
Although Aaron always been pretty smart, things in the classroom always seemed to move a little too fast for him. When Aaron got into the second grade i noticed that his grades were always average, and for a child as smart as he was and as well as he picked up things, this just didn't seem right. I went to the school to talk to the teacher and she said although he was doing well in his school work, he didn't seem to have the same drive during testing. Aaron was the type of kid that didn't like to be still for too long and got very antsy from time to time. The teachers did call me on occasion due to Aaron's excessive talking and getting out of his seat. At this time we lived in Hawthorne Ca. and the teacher suggested that i "put him on meds". Well, anyone who knows me, knows darn well THAT WAS NOT HAPPENING!!! I felt very offended. So i took it upon my self to start sitting in class with him, had a few meetings with the teacher, and various others with the school staff and and found that his major issue was that he didn't read fast enough for their district/state standards. Well, i thought about it for some time and decided that i would hold him back a grade so that he wouldn't get left behind in the 3rd grade just because he didn't read "fast enough" so they said.
Well, as time passed, my husband and many others were kind of upset with me for holding Aaron back but i stood my ground, continued to tutor/help at home and got him enrolled in a program called the IEP program. Oh boy did this make my husband upset. It was like saying our child was a special needs child...in which i think NOTHING is wrong with that but in Aaron's situation this was not the case. All the IEP program did was took more time with Aaron. They took time by taking Aaron out of class during testing so that he would get more time and things were a little more comfortable for him. There are a lot of people that suffer from test anxiety and Aaron was one of them. I wanted Aaron to get whatever help he needed because i KNEW he wanted an exciting future.
Aaron finally moved from second to third grade and then on to fourth and this is where Aaron truly developed a strong desire to BE SOMEBODY! His teacher was Mrs. James...and this lady was the business! She truly understood the needs of all of her students and you would think there were 12 of her because every student learned as if they were receiving one on one teaching sessions. When i say this lady was good...SHE WAS GOOD! One day Mrs. James called me to come talk about Aaron's progress and to my surprise he was doing much better but what she also revealed to me was that Aaron was what they call "kenesthetic"...very energetic. But this teacher knew just how to handle him...i was at the point where i didn't have to be at the school like i was a student...lol.
As time went on Aaron continued to develop his academic skills and moved on to Middle School and to make a long story short...(too late) lol...by the end of the 8th grade we found out that he had been taking Honors classed since the 7th grade and was graduating with a 3.5 GPA...and they NEVER utilized the IEP program AT ALL! In fact...they showed me all the paper work that came from the previous school and said that they didn't even know he was in the program. When Aaron saw his report card he knew then that his dreams were just beginning. Aaron continued that drive of success in High School where he maintained an average of 3.0 to 3.6 for four years...he just graduated with honors with a 3.5 GPA and a FULL scholarship to Northern Arizona University!...We will be dropping him off this weekend and i am soooo proud of him. His scholarship is a FOOTBALL scholarship but Aaron is very serious about achieving a higher learning and proving to HIMSELF that he IS SOMEBODY and he is determined to MAKE IT BIG!..As a proud loving mother I KNOW HE WILL!!!
